Telangana and Andhra Rooftop Solar 2026: Subsidy Guide
Rooftop solar in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh in 2026: PM Surya Ghar and AP top-ups, monthly net metering, TGSPDCL and APSPDCL tariffs, and sizing tips.
Short answer: in both states, homes get the central PM Surya Ghar subsidy (up to ₹78,000). Andhra Pradesh adds about ₹55,000 for SC/ST and ₹20,000 for BC households on 2 kW systems; Telangana has no top-up but gives Gruha Jyothi free units. Both settle net metering monthly and pay for excess export. In Telangana the slab set depends on your total (net) units, so solar that pulls you below 200 units a month saves a lot (check current notification).

Telangana residential tariff (FY 2026-27)
The slab set is chosen by the month's total units. From FY27, net-metered consumers are billed on net consumption.
| Monthly use | Slab rates (₹/unit) |
|---|---|
| up to 100 units | 0–50: 1.95 · 51–100: 3.10 |
| 101–200 units | 0–100: 3.40 · 101–200: 4.80 |
| above 200 units | 0–200: 5.10 · 201–300: 7.70 · 301–400: 9.00 · 401–800: 9.50 · above 800: 10.00 |
Fixed charge about ₹10 per kW (₹50 above 800 units) plus a customer charge of ₹40–160; electricity duty about ₹0.06 per unit; a solar-hour rebate of ₹0.50 may apply to ToD meters.

Net metering rules
| Item | Telangana | Andhra Pradesh |
|---|---|---|
| Regulation | TGERC Rooftop Solar PV Grid Interactive Systems Regulations, 2025 (in force 15 Nov 2025) | APERC Regulation 4 of 2023, first amendment 2025 |
| Capacity | Residential up to full sanctioned load; max 500 kWp; C&I up to 80% | Up to sanctioned load; 500 kWp limit for net metering |
| Settlement | Monthly; excess export paid | Monthly since Feb 2026; excess paid by bank transfer |
| Surplus rate | Lowest solar tariff discovered by the DISCOMs in the previous FY (ask DISCOM) | Ask DISCOM |
| Other | Gross metering up to 1 MWp; a grid support charge in the FY27 order with unclear rooftop applicability | Continuity clarified for existing projects above 500 kWp |
Worked example: Hyderabad home at 350 units
- Without solar: 200 × 5.10 + 100 × 7.70 + 50 × 9.00 = ₹2,240 a month (energy)
- Solar 2.5 kW × 1,510 ≈ 3,775 units a year, about 315 a month on average
- Net use about 35 units → cheapest slab set → about ₹70
- Saving about ₹2,150 a month on average, roughly ₹24,000–26,000 a year (monthly settlement lowers it a little: summer excess is paid at the low rate, and monsoon months bill more)
- Price about ₹1.4–1.7 lakh, minus subsidy ₹69,000
- Simple payback ≈ 3–4 years
Practical points
- Hyderabad and Anantapur model around 1,510–1,520 units per kW a year; Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam about 1,430–1,440.
- Coastal Andhra is cyclone-prone. Heavier sections, stainless fasteners and a design checked against IS 875 (Part 3) are a must near the coast. See structure and wind.
- Monthly settlement in both states means you should size to average monthly use, not to the summer peak.
- Heat: pre-monsoon cell temperatures are high; TOPCon modules and shaded inverters help.
What to double-check
Telangana: Gruha Jyothi status; the slab set the customer falls into before and after solar; surplus rate from the DISCOM; customer-charge band; whether the solar-hour rebate applies.
Andhra Pradesh: surplus rate and payment process; customer-charge band; FPPCA or true-up on the bill; SC/ST or BC eligibility for the state top-up.
How much solar for your city
System size needed to cover a given monthly use, from long-term Global Solar Atlas yields with a 5% rooftop derate (Sunlectric Studio data, Oct 2026). Round up to whole modules and check your roof.
| City | Yield (units per kW per year) | 200 units/month | 300 units/month | 500 units/month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hyderabad | 1,510 | 1.6 kW | 2.4 kW | 4.0 kW |
| Warangal | 1,502 | 1.6 kW | 2.4 kW | 4.0 kW |
| Vijayawada | 1,432 | 1.7 kW | 2.5 kW | 4.2 kW |
| Visakhapatnam | 1,439 | 1.7 kW | 2.5 kW | 4.2 kW |
| Tirupati | 1,463 | 1.6 kW | 2.5 kW | 4.1 kW |
| Anantapur | 1,521 | 1.6 kW | 2.4 kW | 3.9 kW |
Going solar in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh: step by step
- Read the bill. Note the consumer number, tariff category, sanctioned load and phase, and add up 12 months of units. See how to read your electricity bill.
- Size to use. Divide yearly units by your city's yield (table above) and round to a practical module count. Check shadow-free roof space.
- Pick a registered vendor for your Telangana or Andhra DISCOM on pmsuryaghar.gov.in and get an itemised quote. Our installer checklist lists what to ask.
- Apply on the national portal before installation. Systems up to 10 kW are exempt from a technical feasibility study under the central consumer rules, and many DISCOMs give quick or deemed approval.
- Install with DCR modules, a matched inverter, a structure designed for local wind, proper earthing, a lightning arrester and SPDs.
- Net meter and inspection. The DISCOM tests and fits the bi-directional meter and records commissioning.
- Claim the subsidy by submitting bank details on the portal.
Telangana and AP tip: with monthly settlement, size to the average month rather than the summer peak, and show the customer which slab set (Telangana) or slab (AP) they land in after solar.

Questions people ask
Does Andhra Pradesh give extra subsidy for rooftop solar?
Yes, for some groups. AP announced about ₹55,000 extra for SC/ST households on a 2 kW system, making it effectively free with the central subsidy, and about ₹20,000 for BC households, with an optional loan. There is no top-up for general category. Check current notification.
Is net metering monthly in Telangana and AP?
Yes. Telangana's 2025 regulations settle monthly and pay for excess export; AP moved to monthly settlement from February 2026, paying excess by bank transfer. Summer surplus does not carry into the monsoon.
How does Gruha Jyothi affect solar in Telangana?
Eligible households get up to 200 units a month free. If that covers you, solar saves little. If you use more, solar that brings your net use under 200 can move you to a much cheaper slab set.
What size system do I need in Hyderabad?
Hyderabad models at about 1,510 units per kW a year. Divide your yearly units by that: 300 units a month needs about 2.4 kW, so most homes fit 2.5–3 kW.
