Solar in the Monsoon: How Much Output Do You Lose?
How much rooftop solar output drops in India's monsoon, city by city, why net metering evens it out, and how to protect your system from rain and storms.
Short answer: rooftop solar keeps working in the monsoon, but output drops. In much of western and central India, July generation is roughly half of the best spring month; in Pune a 1 kW system modelled at about 158 units in March makes about 81 in July. Net metering banks your summer surplus so the year still balances. Make sure earthing, lightning protection, sealing and drainage are in order before the rains.
How much output drops, by city
Modelled monthly generation per kW (units), from long-term solar data:
| City | Best month | July | August | Yearly |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pune | 158 (Mar) | 81 | 88 | 1,513 |
| Mumbai | 162 (Mar) | 77 | 90 | 1,514 |
| Ahmedabad | 166 (Mar) | 88 | 95 | 1,616 |
| Bhopal | 157 (Mar) | 84 | 88 | 1,518 |
| Jaipur | 156 (Mar) | 101 | 104 | 1,546 |
| Lucknow | 150 (Mar) | 101 | 105 | 1,390 |
| Hyderabad | 153 (Mar) | 92 | 98 | 1,510 |
| Bengaluru | 161 (Mar) | 90 | 97 | 1,498 |
| Chennai | 160 (Mar) | 104 | 109 | 1,486 |
| Kochi | 152 (Mar) | 99 | 111 | 1,491 |
Global Solar Atlas long-term averages with a 5% rooftop derate (Sunlectric Studio data, Oct 2026). Any single year can be better or worse.
Three patterns stand out:
- West coast and Deccan (Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Bhopal) see the deepest dip in July, to roughly half of March.
- Chennai dips less in July and has a second soft patch in November–December, when the north-east monsoon brings its main rain. Kochi's lowest month is June.
- Lucknow and the Gangetic plain dip only moderately in the monsoon; their weakest months are actually December and January, when winter haze and fog cut sunlight (Lucknow models at about 92 units per kW in January).
Why your yearly savings still hold
Under net metering, surplus units from February to May are banked and used in July and August. In states with annual settlement (Maharashtra, UP, MP), this works smoothly. In states with monthly settlement (Karnataka, Telangana, AP), spring surplus is paid out each month at a low rate and does not carry into the monsoon, so monsoon bills rise more. Size accordingly.
Rain is also a free cleaner
The first heavy showers wash away the dust of the dry season. Many owners see output jump on the first clear day after rain. Bird droppings and sticky grime may still need a wipe. See cleaning and maintenance.
Pre-monsoon checklist
- [ ] Earthing: test earth resistance; top up chemical or watered pits as recommended
- [ ] Lightning arrester: mast firm, down conductor intact and properly connected to its own pit
- [ ] SPDs: check indicator windows in DCDB and ACDB; replace any that show failure
- [ ] Cable entries: glands tight, conduits sealed, no cables lying in water channels
- [ ] Roof drainage: structure must not block drain outlets; clear debris
- [ ] Base plates: sealant intact around anchors, no cracks that can leak into the slab
- [ ] Boards: IP-rated DCDB/ACDB doors closed; inverter not exposed to driving rain
- [ ] Structure bolts: tight, especially on high or coastal roofs
Storms and wind
Monsoon squalls and cyclones test the structure. Systems should be designed for the basic wind speed of the location under IS 875 (Part 3), with extra care on high-rise roofs and within about 10 km of the sea. If you live in a cyclone-prone coastal belt, ask your installer for the design basis. Installers, see structure design and wind.
Lightning season
Pre-monsoon and monsoon thunderstorms bring lightning. A properly earthed lightning arrester, plus Type II SPDs on the DC and AC sides, protects the system and the house wiring. Thin down conductors and shared earth pits are common shortcuts that weaken this protection. Details: earthing and lightning for rooftop solar.
Does a battery help in the monsoon?
Only for backup during outages, which can be more frequent in storms. A battery cannot store sunshine you do not get; on a cloudy week it may not fully charge. See do I need a solar battery.
Monitoring tip
Compare each monsoon month with the same month last year, not with April. A drop of a few percent year on year is normal variation; a sharp drop with sunny gaps may mean a fault, a tripped string or new shade.

After the monsoon
Once the rains end, clean the modules, check for loose clamps or shifted cables, look at the SPD windows, and compare October output with last October. This is also a good time to book the yearly service visit, before the dusty months start.

Questions people ask
Do solar panels work in the rain?
Yes, but less. Under thick cloud, output may be a small fraction of a sunny day; under thin cloud it can still be good. Rain also washes dust off the modules.
How much does solar generation drop in the monsoon?
In western and central India, July output is often about half of the best spring month. In Pune, a modelled 1 kW system makes about 158 units in March and about 81 in July. Southern and eastern cities see a smaller dip.
Is it safe to have solar panels during lightning storms?
Yes, if the system has proper earthing, a lightning arrester and surge protection devices on the DC and AC sides. These are part of a good installation.
Should I switch off my solar system during heavy rain?
Not normally. A correctly installed system is designed for rain. Switch off only if water enters the inverter or boards, or a cable is damaged, and call your installer.
