Do I Need a Solar Battery in India? ToD, Outages, Cost
Most Indian homes on net metering do not need a solar battery to save money. When a battery is worth it: outages, ToD tariffs, Kerala rules, and sizing.
Short answer: if your power supply is reasonably reliable and you are on net metering, you do not need a battery to save money; the grid acts as your free battery. Buy a battery if you have frequent or long power cuts, run critical equipment, or your DISCOM charges much more for evening peak units than daytime units. Even then, back up only the essentials, because batteries are the most expensive part of a solar system.
Why net metering beats a battery for savings
Under net metering, a unit you export at noon is credited and you take it back at 9 pm. Storage cost: zero. A battery does the same job but:
- costs money upfront (LFP packs carry 18% GST, against 5% on modules and solar inverters),
- loses about 5–10% of energy in each charge-discharge round trip,
- wears out over a fixed number of cycles and must eventually be replaced.
So a battery almost never "pays for itself" on bill savings alone in a net-metered home. It pays in comfort and continuity.
When a battery is worth it
1. Frequent or long outages
If your area loses power for an hour or more several times a week, a hybrid inverter with a battery keeps lights, fans, internet and the fridge running. An on-grid system cannot do this; it must shut off when the grid fails.
2. Time-of-day (ToD) tariffs with a big evening premium
The Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Amendment Rules, 2023 brought ToD tariffs: solar-hour rates lower and peak-hour rates higher than normal, by about 10–20% each way, rolled out by category and with smart meters. Examples (check current orders):
- Kerala: homes above 250 units a month pay 90% of the rate from 6 am to 6 pm and 125% from 6 pm to 10 pm.
- Maharashtra: ToD/smart-meter residential consumers get a solar-hours (9 am–5 pm) rebate (₹0.80 per unit in the FY26 order, verify FY27).
- Non-residential consumers in several states can only offset solar-hour imports with solar-hour exports.
Where this spread is large, a battery that moves solar into the evening earns a bit more. Try your numbers:
3. Kerala systems above 10 kW
Kerala's 2025 renewable energy regulations require storage for domestic prosumers above 10 kW (about 10% of generation potential for 10–15 kW and 20% for 15–20 kW, check current notification).
4. Low or no export value
If your DISCOM pays very little for surplus (or settles monthly at a low rate) and you cannot use solar during the day, storing it may beat exporting at ₹2–3 per unit. This matters more for offices and shops closed at noon.
How to size a backup battery
- List essential loads with watts: LED lights (10 × 10 W), fans (4 × 60 W), Wi-Fi (15 W), fridge (about 150 W running, 40% duty), TV (100 W).
- Add them up = peak load. The inverter must handle this, with margin for motor starts.
- Energy per outage = load × hours. Example: 600 W average × 4 h = 2.4 kWh.
- Divide by inverter efficiency (about 0.92) and usable depth of discharge (about 0.9 for LFP, 0.5 for lead-acid). - LFP: 2.4 ÷ 0.92 ÷ 0.9 ≈ 2.9 kWh → a 5 kWh pack gives comfortable margin - Lead-acid: 2.4 ÷ 0.92 ÷ 0.5 ≈ 5.2 kWh
| Backup need | Typical loads | LFP size (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Basic, 2–3 hours | lights, fans, Wi-Fi, TV | 2.5–5 kWh |
| Comfortable, 4–6 hours | above + fridge, mixer, laptop | 5–10 kWh |
| One AC at night | above + 1.5 t inverter AC for 4 h | 10–15 kWh |
LFP vs lead-acid
| LFP (LiFePO4) | Tubular lead-acid | |
|---|---|---|
| Usable depth | about 80–90% | about 50% |
| Cycle life | several thousand cycles (check datasheet) | far fewer at deep discharge |
| Maintenance | none, BMS-managed | water top-up, ventilation |
| Weight and space | compact | heavy, bulky |
| Upfront price | higher | lower |
For daily solar cycling, LFP's longer life usually makes it cheaper per stored unit. Check the warranty in years and cycles, the BMS communication with your inverter (CAN or RS485), and the installer's fire-safety plan.
Battery safety checklist
- Mount in a ventilated, shaded place, away from water and kitchen heat.
- Use correctly sized DC cable and a DC breaker; the cable rating must be at least the breaker rating.
- Keep a suitable fire extinguisher nearby (ABC type is common).
- Make sure the battery and inverter are on each other's compatibility list.
A middle path: on-grid now, battery later
If you are unsure, install an on-grid system now and ask the installer to leave space and cable routes for a hybrid upgrade. Battery prices have been falling, and ToD tariffs are still being rolled out. See on-grid vs hybrid vs off-grid and solar payback and IRR.
Reading a battery warranty
Before you buy, check three things in writing: the years covered, the cycles or energy throughput covered, and the capacity guaranteed at the end (for example a stated percentage of original). Ask who replaces a failed module and how quickly.

Questions people ask
Does a solar battery increase savings in India?
Rarely, under net metering. The grid already banks your surplus at no storage cost. A battery mainly buys backup during outages. It can add savings where evening peak tariffs are much higher than daytime rates.
What size battery do I need for backup?
Add up the watts of essential loads, multiply by backup hours, divide by inverter efficiency and the battery's usable depth. Lights, fans, Wi-Fi and a fridge for 4 hours typically need about 3–5 kWh of LFP capacity.
LFP or lead-acid?
LFP (lithium iron phosphate) lasts many more cycles, can be discharged deeper, needs no topping up and is more compact. Lead-acid is cheaper upfront. For daily solar cycling, LFP is usually better value over its life.
Is a battery mandatory for rooftop solar anywhere in India?
Kerala's 2025 regulations require storage for new domestic prosumer systems above 10 kW (a share of generation). Small home systems do not need it. Check current notification.
