On-Grid vs Hybrid vs Off-Grid Solar: Which Is Right?

On-grid, hybrid or off-grid solar for an Indian home? Compare cost, backup, subsidy, net metering and payback, and pick the right system in 2026.

Short answer: an on-grid system feeds your home and the grid and gives the fastest payback and the PM Surya Ghar subsidy, but it switches off during a power cut. A hybrid system adds a battery for backup and can store solar for the evening, at a much higher cost. An off-grid system runs only on solar and batteries and suits places with no reliable grid. For most Indian city homes, on-grid is the right choice; pick hybrid only if outages really hurt.

The three types at a glance

On-grid Hybrid Off-grid
Grid connection Yes, with net meter Yes, with net meter No
Battery None Yes (usually LFP) Yes, large
Works in a power cut No Yes, for backed-up loads Yes
PM Surya Ghar subsidy Yes (DCR modules) Solar part, if net-metered (confirm) No
Relative cost Lowest High (battery adds a lot) Highest per unit used
Payback Fastest Slower; battery pays back rarely Compared with diesel, can be good
Maintenance Low Battery monitoring Battery care is critical

On-grid: the default for Indian homes

An on-grid (grid-tie) inverter converts DC from the panels to AC synchronised with the grid. Your home uses solar first; surplus goes out through the net meter; at night you import.

Why it wins on money: - No battery to buy or replace. - Every unit you make is used or banked under net metering. - The PM Surya Ghar subsidy (up to ₹78,000, check current notification) cuts the price sharply.

Its one big limit: when the grid trips, so does the inverter. This anti-islanding behaviour is required by the CEA connectivity standards to protect linemen working on a "dead" line.

Hybrid: solar plus backup

A hybrid inverter does the on-grid job and also charges and discharges a battery. During a cut, it isolates your backup circuit (lights, fans, fridge, Wi-Fi, maybe one AC) and runs it from solar and battery.

When hybrid makes sense: - Outages of an hour or more, several times a week - Work-from-home, medical equipment or small business needs - You already pay for an inverter-battery (UPS) setup and want to replace it - Your state has a strong evening peak tariff (see ToD below)

What it costs: the hybrid inverter costs more than an on-grid one, and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries are the big addition. In our October 2026 sample catalogue, a 5 kWh, 48 V LFP pack lists at about ₹72,000 before 18% GST. Batteries attract 18% GST, while modules and solar inverters are at 5%.

Design tips: - Back up only essential loads. A whole-house backup with ACs needs a very large battery. - Size the battery for the backup hours you actually need, using the battery article and the simulator below. - On a three-phase home, a single-phase hybrid backs up only one phase.

Off-grid: when there is no grid

Off-grid systems use a solar charge controller or off-grid inverter, a battery bank and the panels. There is no export, so everything you do not use or store is wasted, and the battery has to carry you through cloudy days.

Good fits: farmhouses without a connection, remote homestays, pumps, telecom and security sites, or as a diesel-generator replacement.

Watch out: off-grid systems need bigger arrays and batteries to cover the monsoon. A system that runs happily in April may struggle in July, when output in western India can fall to about half of March levels.

What about my existing inverter-battery (UPS)?

Many homes already have a 1–2 kVA UPS with tubular lead-acid batteries. You can:

  1. Keep it and add on-grid solar. The UPS keeps working for outages; solar cuts the bill. Simple and cheap.
  2. Replace it with a hybrid. One box, better efficiency, solar charging. Worth it when the old batteries are near the end of life.
  3. Add a "solar UPS" (PCU). Off-grid style, usually without net metering. Cheaper than hybrid but you lose net metering benefits on surplus.

Time-of-day tariffs change the maths, a little

Under the Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Amendment Rules, 2023, ToD tariffs make solar-hour units cheaper and evening peak units dearer than normal, phased in by consumer category and smart-meter rollout. In Kerala, homes above 250 units a month pay 90% of the rate from 6 am to 6 pm and 125% from 6 pm to 10 pm (check current order). A battery that shifts solar into the evening can earn a little more there. For most homes the gain does not yet pay for the battery on its own. Try it:

Quick decision guide

  • Reliable grid, want lowest bill: on-grid.
  • Frequent outages, want comfort: hybrid with a small battery for essentials.
  • No grid or diesel today: off-grid, sized for the monsoon.
  • Unsure: start on-grid with a hybrid-ready plan (space and cabling), add a battery later.

Questions people ask

Which solar system is best for homes in India?

For most city homes with reasonably reliable power, an on-grid system with net metering gives the fastest payback and qualifies for the PM Surya Ghar subsidy. Choose hybrid if outages are frequent or long.

Does an on-grid system work during a power cut?

No. On-grid inverters must shut down when the grid fails (anti-islanding protection) so line workers are safe. Your house goes dark like your neighbours'.

Can I get the subsidy on a hybrid system?

The PM Surya Ghar subsidy is for grid-connected rooftop systems with net metering and DCR modules. A hybrid system that is grid-connected and net-metered is generally treated the same way for the solar part; the battery is not subsidised. Confirm with your DISCOM and the current guidelines.

When does off-grid make sense?

Where there is no grid connection or the grid is so unreliable that it is effectively absent: farmhouses, remote sites, telecom shelters. Off-grid systems need a battery bank sized for cloudy days and cost the most per unit.
