Solar Panel Cleaning and Maintenance in India

How often to clean solar panels in India, the right way to clean, what to check monthly and yearly, and what maintenance should cost in 2026.

Short answer: rinse and wipe your panels with soft water and a soft brush every 2–4 weeks in dry months, early in the morning or late evening. Check the inverter app weekly. Once a year, have a technician test earthing, tighten connections, check MC4 connectors, SPDs and the structure. A well-kept system loses little to dust; a neglected one can lose a noticeable share of output in dry, dusty months.

Why cleaning matters

Dust, bird droppings and leaves block light. Bird droppings are worst: a single spot can create a hot spot on a cell and pull down the output of the whole string. In dry months in North and West India, a dusty layer builds up within days. Near construction sites, highways and cement plants it builds faster.

Your monitoring app is the best guide. Compare similar sunny days: if output falls steadily and recovers after cleaning, dust is the cause.

How to clean, step by step

  1. Time it right. Early morning (before 8 am) or evening. Cold water on hot glass at noon can stress it, and water evaporates leaving spots.
  2. Stay safe. Do not stand or walk on modules. Use the walkway. Never clean during rain or lightning.
  3. Rinse first with low-pressure water to loosen dust.
  4. Wipe gently with a soft brush, sponge or microfibre mop on a pole.
  5. Rinse again to remove loosened dirt.
  6. Hard water? If your water is very hard, it leaves white marks. Use RO reject water only if it is not very salty, or a final rinse with softer water. A squeegee helps.

Do not use: pressure washers, detergents, abrasive powders, steel wool, or harsh chemicals.

Many homes add a tap on the roof when installing. It makes regular cleaning far easier.

Monthly owner checks (10 minutes)

  • [ ] Inverter display or app: any error codes? Daily generation reasonable for the weather?
  • [ ] Look at the modules: cracks, bird nests, heavy droppings, new shade (a tree grown taller, a new structure next door)?
  • [ ] Cables: anything hanging loose, chewed by rodents, or lying in water?
  • [ ] DCDB and ACDB: doors closed, no burning smell, no tripped breakers?

Yearly technician check

Check Why
Earth resistance of each pit Earthing protects people and equipment; pits dry out
Tightness of module clamps and structure bolts Wind and thermal cycling loosen them
Anchors and waterproofing around base plates Prevents roof leaks
MC4 connectors (no heat marks) Bad crimps cause arcs and fires
DC and AC SPD status windows SPDs wear out after surges
String voltages and currents vs design Finds failed modules or bypass diodes
Inverter fan/filters (if any), firmware Prevents overheating and derating
Corrosion on structure, especially near the sea Early repair is cheap

Thermal imaging, where available, quickly spots hot cells and bad joints.

What does maintenance cost?

  • Owner-cleaned: mostly water and an annual check. Typical cost is a few hundred rupees per kW per year (we use ₹300–600 per kW per year as the owner-cleaned range).
  • Paid AMC: in 2026 market quotes ran about ₹2,500–4,000 per kW per year, depending on visit frequency and city.
  • PM Surya Ghar systems: the vendor provides 5 years of comprehensive maintenance as part of the scheme (check current notification). Ask exactly what it covers.

These are market ranges, not fixed prices. Ask for a written scope.

Common problems and what they look like

Symptom Likely cause
Zero output on a sunny day Grid outage (on-grid shuts down), tripped MCB, inverter fault
Output drops in the afternoon on hot days High grid voltage tripping the inverter, or overheating
One string much lower Shading, failed module, loose MC4, blown fuse
Output slowly falling over weeks Dust build-up
Repeated inverter "grid over-voltage" Tail-end feeder; ask the DISCOM to check the transformer tap

Grid over-voltage trips are common in Indian neighbourhoods at midday. Do not let anyone raise the inverter's voltage limits beyond what the DISCOM and the standards allow; ask the DISCOM to fix the supply.

Monsoon and seasonal care

Before the monsoon, check drains around the structure, tighten bolts and inspect earthing. After storms, look for shifted modules or debris. See solar in the monsoon.

Inverter life

String inverters typically last 10–15 years, so plan one replacement in a 25-year life. Keep the inverter in shade with airflow; heat shortens its life.

Safety first on the roof

  • Never walk on modules or lean ladders against them.
  • Keep away from roof edges without a parapet; use a harness on sloped roofs.
  • Do not open MC4 connectors or DC isolators under load; DC arcs do not self-extinguish like AC.
  • Switch off and call a technician if you see burn marks, smell burning or find a damaged cable.
  • Keep children away from DCDB, ACDB and the inverter.

Keep a simple log

Note cleaning dates, any error codes and monthly generation in a notebook or the app. Patterns jump out quickly, and a log makes warranty claims easier.

Questions people ask

How often should I clean solar panels in India?

Every 2–4 weeks in dry, dusty months; less in the monsoon when rain does part of the job. Near highways, construction, cement plants or the sea, clean more often. Let your monitoring app guide you: a drop on sunny days usually means dust.

Can I clean panels with a pressure washer or detergent?

No. High pressure can damage seals and microcrack cells, and detergents can leave residue or harm the anti-reflective coating. Use soft water, a soft brush or mop, and do it early morning or evening.

What does solar maintenance cost?

If you clean it yourself, mainly water and an annual check, often a few hundred rupees per kW a year. A paid AMC is more. PM Surya Ghar systems include five years of maintenance from the vendor.

How do I know if my system has a fault?

Check the inverter app or display. Zero output on a sunny day, an error code, a sudden drop compared with the same week last year, or one string much lower than the others all need a technician.
