Madhya Pradesh Rooftop Solar 2026: Subsidy and Net Metering
Rooftop solar in MP in 2026: PM Surya Ghar subsidy, MPERC net metering with Oct–Sep settlement, APPC credit, FY27 tariff, Indira Griha Jyoti and sizing.
Short answer: MP homes get the central PM Surya Ghar subsidy (up to ₹78,000); no state top-up was found. Net metering is allowed up to sanctioned load (max 500 kW) with monthly netting and annual settlement on an October–September year; surplus is credited at the APPC (about ₹2.14 per unit) against bills, not paid in cash. MPERC rejected grid support charges on rooftop solar. FY27 tariffs rose about 4.8% on average, and yields of about 1,460–1,530 units per kW a year make solar pay well (check current notification).

| PM Surya Ghar, residential | ₹30,000/kW up to 2 kW, ₹18,000 for the 3rd kW, max ₹78,000 |
| PM Surya Ghar, housing societies | ₹18,000/kW, up to 500 kW (3 kW per house) |
| State top-up | None found |
| Fee waiver | Draft MPERC amendment (May 2026) proposed waiving processing and meter-testing fees for PM Surya Ghar applicants |

Residential tariff (FY 2026-27)
MPERC's FY27 order (26 March 2026) raised tariffs by about 4.8% on average, effective 13 April 2026.
| Units per month | ₹/unit |
|---|---|
| 0–50 | 4.71 |
| 51–150 | 5.67 |
| 151–300 | 7.05 |
| above 300 | 7.24 |
- Fixed charge: up to 150 units, a flat ₹81 or ₹134 a month depending on category (verify); above 150 units, ₹30 per 0.1 kW of load derived from consumption
- Electricity duty about 9% (≤100 units) to 12% (above), FPPAS about 5% (verify)
- Indira Griha Jyoti: most households up to 150 units a month pay a subsidised amount (first 100 units at ₹100). If you are covered, solar savings on those units are small.

Net metering rules
| Item | Madhya Pradesh (MPERC) |
|---|---|
| Regulation | MPERC Grid Interactive Renewable Energy Systems Regulations (Revision-II), 2024 (RG-39 of 2024) |
| Capacity | Up to sanctioned load, max 500 kW |
| Settlement | Monthly netting, carry-forward, annual settlement on an October–September year |
| Surplus | Credited at APPC of the year (about ₹2.14/unit), against the next bill, not in cash |
| Grid support charge | Rejected by MPERC |
Worked example: 3 kW in Indore
- Use: 300 units a month
- Energy: 50 × 4.71 + 100 × 5.67 + 150 × 7.05 ≈ ₹1,860, plus duty and FPPAS ≈ ₹2,150 a month
- Removing most of this saves about ₹24,000–26,000 a year (fixed charge stays, and falls a little as consumption-based load falls)
- Generation: 3 kW × 1,526 ≈ 4,580 units; surplus about 980 units credited at about ₹2.14
- Price about ₹1.65–1.95 lakh, minus ₹78,000 subsidy
- Simple payback ≈ 3.5–4.5 years. A 2.5 kW system would export less and pay back a little faster.
Practical points for MP
- Yields: Indore 1,526, Bhopal 1,518, Jabalpur 1,519, Gwalior 1,464 units per kW a year.
- Monsoon: July output in Indore and Bhopal is about half of March. The October–September settlement year means the credit balance is checked just after the monsoon.
- Tilt: around 25° is optimal at MP's latitudes; many rooftop structures use 15–20° to limit wind load, with a small yield trade-off.
- Bill credit only: since surplus is credited, not paid, oversizing gives you credits you may never use.
What to double-check
- Exact FY27 slab rates on the bill (order effective 13 April 2026)
- Fixed charge basis above 150 units
- Duty and FPPAS percentages
- Current APPC used for surplus credit
- Whether the fee-waiver amendment has been notified
How much solar for your city
System size needed to cover a given monthly use, from long-term Global Solar Atlas yields with a 5% rooftop derate (Sunlectric Studio data, Oct 2026). Round up to whole modules and check your roof.
| City | Yield (units per kW per year) | 200 units/month | 300 units/month | 500 units/month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Indore | 1,526 | 1.6 kW | 2.4 kW | 3.9 kW |
| Bhopal | 1,518 | 1.6 kW | 2.4 kW | 4.0 kW |
| Jabalpur | 1,519 | 1.6 kW | 2.4 kW | 3.9 kW |
| Gwalior | 1,464 | 1.6 kW | 2.5 kW | 4.1 kW |
Going solar in Madhya Pradesh: step by step
- Read the bill. Note the consumer number, tariff category, sanctioned load and phase, and add up 12 months of units. See how to read your electricity bill.
- Size to use. Divide yearly units by your city's yield (table above) and round to a practical module count. Check shadow-free roof space.
- Pick a registered vendor for MPPaKVVCL, MPMKVVCL or MPPKVVCL on pmsuryaghar.gov.in and get an itemised quote. Our installer checklist lists what to ask.
- Apply on the national portal before installation. Systems up to 10 kW are exempt from a technical feasibility study under the central consumer rules, and many DISCOMs give quick or deemed approval.
- Install with DCR modules, a matched inverter, a structure designed for local wind, proper earthing, a lightning arrester and SPDs.
- Net meter and inspection. The DISCOM tests and fits the bi-directional meter and records commissioning.
- Claim the subsidy by submitting bank details on the portal.
MP tip: because surplus is only credited against bills, show the customer the expected year-end credit and size so it stays small. Check whether the fee waiver for scheme applicants has been notified.
