How Solar Installers Can Win More Residential Jobs
Practical ways for Indian solar installers to win more home rooftop jobs: fast bill-based quotes, honest payback, subsidy handling, proof of quality.
Short answer: homeowners pick the installer who answers first with a credible number, explains savings from their own bill, takes the subsidy and net-metering paperwork off their hands, and proves quality with photos, references and a specific bill of materials. Speed, clarity and trust win more jobs than the lowest price.
1. Reply the same day, with a range
A homeowner who sends a bill on WhatsApp is often comparing several installers. Reply within hours with:
- the likely size (from units and city yield),
- a price range before and after subsidy,
- a line on next steps ("I can visit Saturday at 10").
Use a simple formula: yearly units ÷ local yield (about 1,400–1,650 units per kW a year). Our articles on 200, 300 and 500 units are written so you can share them with customers.
2. Sell savings from their bill, not averages
The most persuasive number is the value of each unit solar removes from the customer's bill: their top slab rate plus wheeling, fuel surcharge and duty. In Maharashtra, a 300-unit home's top-slab unit is worth about ₹14; in Kerala, keeping a home below 250 units can save about ₹12 per unit. Show it on their bill. See how to read an electricity bill.
Be conservative: low tariff escalation, realistic yield, and the low surplus rate for exported units. Customers trust installers whose first-year numbers come true.
3. Size honestly
Recommending a system bigger than the customer's use, "to earn from the grid", backfires. In most states surplus earns ₹2–3.90 per unit. When the customer sees a small year-end credit, they feel misled. Right-sized systems produce happy referrals.
4. Own the paperwork
Offer a clear, written process:
- Portal registration on pmsuryaghar.gov.in
- DISCOM approval
- Installation
- Net meter and inspection
- Subsidy claim and bank details
Give a realistic timeline for your DISCOM and update the customer at each step on WhatsApp. See how to apply for PM Surya Ghar.
5. Make quality visible
Customers cannot judge a lightning down conductor or a chemical anchor. Show them:
- Photos from your past jobs: structure, anchors with sealant, earthing pits, neat DCDB and ACDB
- Your standard bill of materials, with exact makes and models
- Why it matters: "a thicker down conductor", "chemical anchors don't crack thin slabs", "separate pits we test and record"
- Warranty papers and who handles claims
A short site checklist on your letterhead, ticked at handover, builds trust. Our installer checklist for homeowners tells customers what to look for; make sure you pass it.
6. Use a proper proposal
A one-page price is easy to undercut. A proposal with a roof layout, string design, expected monthly generation, 25-year cash flow and a bill of materials is much harder to beat. Sunlectric Studio produces this from the customer's bill and roof in minutes, with state tariffs and net-metering rules built in.
7. Offer finance
PM Surya Ghar offers collateral-free loans through public sector banks linked to the repo rate. Show the EMI next to the monthly saving. When the saving exceeds the EMI, the decision becomes easy.
8. Follow up, politely
- Day 1: proposal sent
- Day 3: answer questions, offer a site visit
- Day 7: share a completed job nearby
- Day 14: check if anything is holding them back
Stop after that unless they ask. Over-following up damages your name in close-knit neighbourhoods.
9. Turn customers into referrals
- Share a monthly generation summary for the first few months.
- Clean and check the system at the first service visit and send photos.
- Ask for a review and a referral once the first net-metered bill arrives.
- Housing societies and offices often follow when a resident's system works well. See solar for housing societies.
10. Protect your margins on the supply side
Fast quotes need reliable prices and stock. Lock prices for the January–March rush early, keep a standard kit for common sizes, and challenge supplier quotes when you see a better price elsewhere. That is what Sunlectric's Season Lock, kits and Beat-my-PI exist for.
A simple weekly routine
- Monday: update your price list from your distributor's sheet; refresh standard quotes.
- Daily: reply to every enquiry the same day.
- Mid-week: site visits and proposals.
- Friday: follow up on open proposals and check your completed systems' monitoring for faults.
- Monthly: collect two new photos and one review from recent customers.
Small habits, done every week, build the reputation that brings referrals.
Partner with your distributor
Your distributor sees prices, stock and failure patterns across many installers. Use that: ask for price alerts before the January–March rush, early warning on stock shortages, and help with warranty claims. A distributor who replies fast on WhatsApp is as important as a good crew.
Train your team
Your site supervisor and sales person are your brand on the customer's roof. Make sure they can explain net metering, the subsidy steps and why your earthing and structure are better, in simple words. The free Sunlectric Academy modules and certificates help new staff get there quickly.

Questions people ask
How fast should an installer reply to a solar enquiry?
As fast as you can, ideally the same day with at least a size and price range. Homeowners usually contact several installers, and the first clear, credible answer often wins the site visit.
What makes a residential solar proposal convincing?
It starts from the customer's own bill, shows the value of each saved unit, states every assumption, lists exact makes and models, explains subsidy steps and timelines, and shows the system on their roof.
How do I compete with cheaper quotes?
Compare specifications line by line with the customer: structure steel and coating, anchors, earthing pits, lightning down conductor, SPDs, cable sizes and service. Many low quotes cut these. Show photos of your past work.
Should I take on the PM Surya Ghar paperwork for the customer?
Yes. Portal registration, DISCOM approval, net metering and subsidy claims are the parts homeowners fear most. Handling them well is a strong selling point.
