Solar Inverter Selection: DC/AC Ratio, MPPT, Phase

Choose an on-grid or hybrid inverter in India: DC/AC ratio 1.1–1.25, MPPT count and current, voltage window, phase rules, heat, certification, service.

Short answer: match the inverter to the array, the roof and the grid. Aim for a DC/AC ratio of about 1.1 (homes) to 1.2 (commercial); give each orientation or string length its own MPPT; check MPPT input current against modern 14–18 A modules; keep cold Voc under the maximum DC voltage; follow your DISCOM's phase rules; and pick a model with India certification, local service and good heat performance. For subsidy, remember the CFA counts the lower of DC and AC capacity.

1. DC/AC ratio

DC/AC ratio = array kWp ÷ inverter rated AC kW.

Ratio What happens
Below 0.9 Inverter underused; you paid for capacity you rarely reach
1.0–1.25 Typical sweet spot in India; little clipping, better morning and evening output
Above 1.3 Clipping grows on clear, cool days; check the inverter's max DC input

Sunlectric Studio targets 1.1 for residential and 1.2 for commercial, and warns outside 0.9–1.3. Real-world modules rarely produce nameplate power on Indian roofs because of heat, dust and cable losses, so a modest ratio above 1.0 usually loses very little to clipping.

Subsidy note: PM Surya Ghar counts system capacity as the lower of DC and AC. A 3.3 kWp array on a 3 kW inverter is a 3 kW system for subsidy, which is fine at the 3 kW cap. A 3.3 kWp array on a 2.7 kW inverter is only a 2.7 kW system.

2. MPPT count and current

  • One MPPT per condition: each orientation (east/west faces), each string length, and each shading condition should have its own MPPT.
  • Current per MPPT: modules with 182 mm cells have Isc around 14 A; 210 mm-cell modules reach 18 A or more. Check the inverter's max input current and max short-circuit current per MPPT. Older 12.5 A inputs clip modern modules.
  • Two strings on one MPPT: must be identical (same modules, length, orientation).

3. Voltage window

  • Max DC voltage: typically 600 V on small single-phase inverters, 1,000–1,100 V on three-phase. String cold Voc must stay below it.
  • MPPT range: string hot Vmp must stay above the lower limit; string Vmp at normal temperatures should sit comfortably inside the full-power MPPT range.
  • Start-up voltage: longer strings start earlier in the morning.

Details and worked examples: string sizing for Indian temperatures.

4. Phase and connection rules

  • Up to 10 kW: single-phase or three-phase connection allowed under CEA connectivity rules; above 10 kW: three-phase.
  • Single-phase inverter on a three-phase connection: many DISCOMs cap this at about 5 kW to limit imbalance (MSEDCL practice; check your DISCOM's current circular). Above it, use a three-phase inverter.
  • Hybrids on three-phase homes: a single-phase hybrid backs up only one phase. Plan essential loads accordingly.
  • Net meter type: follows the consumer connection; CT-operated meters above about 45 kW connected load.

5. Grid behaviour on Indian feeders

  • Over-voltage trips: tail-end feeders can sit at 250–270 V. Keep AC voltage drop low (about 1.5% to the meter), and choose inverters with good voltage ride-through and reactive-power support where the DISCOM allows. See cable sizing.
  • Settings: use the India grid settings required by your DISCOM; do not widen trip limits beyond what is permitted.
  • RCD compatibility: check whether the inverter needs a Type A or Type B RCCB (transformerless inverters without internal residual-current monitoring may need Type B).

6. Heat and placement

Inverters derate when hot. Mount in shade with clear airflow, away from direct afternoon sun and kitchen exhausts. An inverter on a west wall in Rajasthan or Vidarbha can lose output in May afternoons and age faster.

7. Certification and documents

  • BIS registration for the inverter model and anti-islanding test report, as required in India
  • Inclusion on the DISCOM's accepted list where one exists
  • Datasheet, manual and warranty terms (5–10 years typical; extensions available on some models)

8. Hybrid inverters

Check on top of the above: - Battery voltage: 48 V (low voltage) or high-voltage stack; compatibility list with your battery and BMS protocol - Battery port power and charge/discharge current limits vs the essential load - Backup output: continuous and surge rating; changeover time - Bypass switch and essential-load DB in the design

See do I need a solar battery.

9. Service and lifetime cost

String inverters typically last 10–15 years, so most systems need one replacement in 25 years. Prefer brands with: - local service engineers and spare stock, - fast replacement under warranty, - remote monitoring you and the customer can access.

Quick selection checklist

  1. Array kWp and DC/AC ratio target
  2. Orientations and string lengths → MPPT count
  3. Module Isc vs MPPT current
  4. Cold Voc vs max DC voltage; hot Vmp vs MPPT minimum
  5. Phase rule for the DISCOM
  6. Certification and DISCOM acceptance
  7. Placement, heat and monitoring
  8. Warranty and service support

Common inverter mistakes

  • Choosing by kW alone and ignoring MPPT current
  • Putting east and west strings on one MPPT
  • Mounting the inverter in direct afternoon sun

Questions people ask

What DC/AC ratio should I use in India?

About 1.1 for homes and 1.2 for commercial roofs is a sensible target. Below about 0.9 the inverter is oversized; above about 1.3 clipping losses grow. Check the inverter's maximum DC input and the subsidy rule that counts the lower of DC and AC capacity.

How many MPPTs do I need?

One MPPT per orientation, string length or shading condition. A single south-facing array needs one or two; east-west roofs or mixed shading need at least two.

Can a single-phase inverter go on a three-phase connection?

Often yes, up to a DISCOM limit, commonly about 5 kW (MSEDCL practice). Above that, use a three-phase inverter. Above 10 kW, connection must be three-phase under CEA rules.

Why does my inverter trip on high voltage at noon?

Tail-end feeders can rise above the inverter's trip limit when many systems export. Reduce AC voltage drop with a bigger cable, and ask the DISCOM to check the transformer tap. Do not raise trip limits beyond what the DISCOM allows.
